UK Holidaymakers ready to pack their bags and head for the sun

We asked people in the UK about their UK & overseas travel intentions and split them into two groups. Regular overseas holidaymakers who have taken an overseas holiday in the last 2 years and usually take one or more overseas holidays every year and regular UK holidaymakers, who have taken a UK holiday in the last 2 years and usually take one or more UK holidays every year.

Of those in the overseas group, 61% said they expected to holiday abroad before the end of September this year. A further 18% expect to take their next holiday abroad between October and November this year, with only 21% thinking it will be 2022 or beyond before they can holiday abroad again. This means 78% of people who usually holiday abroad expect to be holidaying abroad in 2021.

Regular UK holidaymakers showed even more confidence, with 68% expecting to take a UK break before the end of September, with a further 15% expecting to get away between October and December, which means a whopping 83% of them expect to take a UK break in 2021.

Of the overseas holidaymakers expecting to get away before the end of the summer, only 27% have already booked their holiday, and only 23% from the UK group have already booked. This is supported by search data from google, which show that searches for package holidays have dropped 75% since last January, with searches for cruises dropping 74%. This suggests that while people are expecting to travel, they aren’t yet confident enough to search and book holidays.

The numbers also vary considerably by age range, with 72% of 18-24 year olds expecting to holiday abroad this year, dropping to only 50% in the 45+ age range. For UK holidaymakers, while 77% of 18 -24 year olds expect to take a UK break before the end of the summer, this only drops to 60% for over 45’s suggesting those in the older age bracket have more confidence in being able to take a UK holiday than a holiday overseas.

It also seems that most people are resigned to putting up with some inconvenience if they want to travel overseas. Of people expecting to holiday abroad this year, only 6% think they won’t face any covid related restrictions when they travel, and of those not expecting to travel until next year, only 13% think the restrictions will be fully lifted by then. Overall 67% of people think they will be wearing a mask at some point on their nnext holiday, 65% think they will be required to social distance and 63% think that Covid-19 testing will need to be factored into their travel plans. On top of this 43% are expecting they will need to quarantine on return home.

The survey was conducted on the 11th & 12th January 2021 using an online panel of 200 UK respondents aged 18 years and over.
