Costa Rica car hire tips

Costa Rica isn’t a large country, you could drive from top to bottom in under 9 hours. Most rentals begin and end at San Jose Airport with most major car rental companies represented including Hertz, Avis and Enterprise.

Driving in Costa Rica

To rent a car in Costa Rica you’ll need your government issued driving licence as well as a credit card to cover your deposit. You should also carry ID with you when driving. Most of the roads in San Jose are in good conditions, though the further out of town you get, the more varied the road conditions come. Some roads in more remote areas are only accessible with four wheel drive so make sure you research in advance if you are planning to head off the beaten track. Similarly, while signposting in and around the capital is generally good, if you are heading away from town signposting can be patchy so a satnav is highly recommended.

The roads in the capital can be busy, with cars, motorbikes and scooters zipping through the narrow streets. Scooters and motorbikes tend to weave in and out of the traffic so take car and check your mirrors before manoeuvring or changing lanes.

During the wet season from May to November, some roads can be affected by landslides so particular care should be taken during these months.
