Owners David & Eleanor took over the business in 1998, when David’s parents retired after running the shop for 16 years, and now have recruited their own daughters to work part-time in the restaurant. A must-try is their curry sauce which the locals rave about.

This popular East Herts take away has been recently revamped, and offers a small café style area if you prefer to eat in. Captain’s won second place in the 2019 National Fish and Chip Awards. Bizzie Lizzies runs two Skipton outlets, each offering a takeaway and dine in service. This family run operation uses sustainable cod and haddock, backed up with chips double fried in beef dripping. This mother and son venture in the village of Halton, east of Lancaster, has been serving up award winning fare for almost a decade. Among its accolades, Blacks won the coveted Quality Champion award in the 2019 National Fish and Chip Awards. The Shillingford family have been running this self-described fish café for more than 30 years, and in that time they’ve gotten pretty good at what they do. Their focus is on making fish and chips healthier, without losing the great taste that has made it an English favourite. Shillingfords’ menu is limited, with a small selection of different fish (cod, plaice, haddock, scampi), chips, sweet potato fries and halloumi fries – that’s about it. Hutchinsons is another fish & chip shop you’d likely give little notice as you were walking by. A slightly dated exterior with no flashing signs drawing you in, it’s a true local secret that Hutchinson’s has the best fish & chips in Helston. Plaice Station opened in 2007 in Padgate, Warrington. They are family run, and use local produce whenever possible. All the fish is MSC certified, with most food cooked fresh to order. Owners Nigel and Linda revamped an old terraced shop and committed their time, money, and energy to refining their fish-frying skills and investing in top-of-the-line kitchen equipment. It’s apparent they pass down this knowledge to their staff as they were the first-ever Fish & Chip Shop to have two Young Fish Fryer award winners working at the same shop.

Opened in late 2016 in Barnard Castle, Katie’s immediately made it onto the fish & chip map by winning multiple awards in the first 6-months of business. With a small team and a passion for quality, the awards and hungry customers continued to roll in, and in 2019, Katie’s was a finalist in the NFFF Fish & Chip Quality Award.

Shaws of Dodworth have been serving up great quality fish and chips since 1979. The state of the art shop on Dodworth High Street has indoor and outdoor seating, and as well as delicious fish and chips, they also serve Lavazza coffee, tea and a variety of award winning local ice cream.

At Godfrey’s Fish & Chips in Harpenden, you’ll find a simple yet clean and modern restaurant that over-delivers on every front. Luke, the owner of Godfrey’s, has been in the fish & chip game since he was a mere 12 years old when he’d help peel and cut potatoes at his parent's fish & chip shop. His experience is apparent, as every fish is perfectly cooked to get the ideal flaky yet fluffy texture and served with complimentary homemade tarter sauce. While it’ll be nearly impossible to pass over the fish, the pies are all homemade with inspiration from Luke’s father's time as a Navy chef.

Fish and Chips @ Weston Grove was crowned best newcomer in 2019, and this husband and wife run takeaway went on to win 3rd place in 2020’s National Fish and Chip Awards. Their menu features sustainable cod and haddock, along with homemade chilli and locally made pies. ‘Posh sides’ include deep fried halloumi with sweet chilli sauce, and a Yorkshire caviar (mushy peas) fritter. The menu also offers an array of gluten free and vegan options, including pies and sausages.

Newly renovated in 2021, Our Plaice in Hagley is even more appealing now that it was already! The small takeaway shop benefits from a comfortable waiting area and a small outside seating area, where guests can enjoy their food or wait while it cooks. Our Plaice as a brand was founded in 1968 by the Howard family, who still run the company today. The Hagley branch has been open since 2003, serving only the tastiest and most responsibly sourced ingredients. They also own a mobile chip van, which can often be seen at local events, or can be hired privately for parties and other events.

Paignton Pier Chippy Co is located, as the name suggests, at the near end of Paignton Pier in Devon. They came in the top 3 at the National Fish & Chip awards of 2020 and 2019, and have won a host of other local awards. This is quite impressive for a restaurant which only opened in 2018. Paignton Pier Chippy Co are committed to using only sustainably sourced fish and can trace every fish they serve to an MSC-certified source. As well as their classic fish and chip shop menu, the company also sells burgers and pies. There’s also a gluten free range and a children’s menu, so entire families can enjoy their meal along the pier.

Brownsover Fish Bar is a popular fish bar serving a varied takeaway menu spanning traditional fish and chips, plus burgers, kebabs, pies and chicken portions. The seafood platter teams calamari, scampi, fish bites, and battered mushrooms with chips and salad. Sides includes halloumi fritters, and cheese and onion croquettes. A children’s menu and vegetarian dishes are available.

Although London isn’t as close to the sea as many destinations featured in this article, Seafresh Fish Restaurant can boast that it sources the majority of its fresh fish from the world famous Billingsgate Fish Market. Established in 1965, the restaurant is still going strong today, suggesting it is doing something right! Guests can eat in the large, spacious restaurant, or order fish and chips for takeaway. Mussels, clams, lobster and calamari are just a handful of the options available if you don’t fancy classic fish and chips, testament to the diversity of the menu and the freshness of ingredients used.
